What are cookies?

Cookies are small pieces of information we place on your device when you use our app. Some of these cookies can be recognised by websites when you visit them. This can help keep track of your preferences, and also helps us keep our website and apps secure. SDKs are software tools which enable us to track, report and analyse the use of our mobile app.

How do we use them?

Our cookies help to give you a better banking experience through improved services like live chat, and better security. Cookies also enable us to show you ads that you may find useful.

How long do the cookies last?

Session cookies are used only while you are logged in to the app. Persistent cookies are stored until a specific expiry date or until you delete them.

Whose cookies?

First party cookies are from Bank of Ireland and are only used by us. Third party cookies are owned by other organisations such as advertising partners.

Categories of cookies we use

Necessary cookies allow you to use secure areas of our apps. They are necessary to provide the online services customers want and they are set automatically if you use our apps. The mobile app uses the cookies listed here and a software development kit called FraudNet for essential background functions. These include session management, network load balancing, web access firewall, authentication and fraud prevention. They are not used to track user activity. We believe that these cookies are necessary for a better and safer customer experience, and do not need prior consent from the customer.

Full list of necessary cookies:

Performance cookies collect information about how you use our apps. They tell us which pages you go to most often, and whether you get error messages. Any information stored by performance cookies does not personally identify you.

Google Analytics cookies help us to measure our app’s performance. They show us how customers use the app, how long they stay on, where they came from, and whether they are new or returning users. By opting out of performance cookies, you also opt out of Google Analytics cookies.

Full list of performance cookies:

Functional cookies allow us to remember choices that you have previously made, like your preferred language or changes to text size. These cookies can keep track of progress when you’re completing online application forms, and help provide services you’ve asked for, like enabling video. We currently do not use functional cookies on our mobile app.

Advertising or targeting cookies help us make our advertising more relevant to you. If you do not allow these cookies, the advertising you see may be less relevant for you. Our advertising partners can also use these cookies to show you relevant adverts on other websites, based on the products and services that you have shown an interest in while using our app. You may also see advertising for BoI on other websites. We currently do not use advertising or targeting cookies on our mobile app.

How can you manage cookies?

When you use our 365 online service or mobile app, you can choose to allow all cookies, or manage them through your cookie settings. You have the option of selecting the categories of cookies (apart from necessary ones) that you want to allow. You can change your mind at any time.
